Unexpected developments

By now any of you who are plugged in to the 40K rumor mill have already heard about GW pulling out of the GT circuit. If you haven't, there's an excellent article about it on Fronttline Gaming. It seems that GW is removing it's prize support for the independent conventions and tournaments that sprang up after they decided to discontinue Games Day.

Not surprising, as it does make a fair amount of financial sense, but from the perspective of Customer Support, it kind of sucks. GW has to remain competitive- after all, they're still top dog in the wargaming department, and no doubt want to keep it that way.

So... saving all that money by dropping Games Day, prize support... switching from metal to resin (Finecast), licensing products for use in video games... where's all that savings and income going? Well... rule of thumb: If you're the biggest guy on the block and you see a scrappy competitor start to take away what is yours, either knock 'em out, or buy 'em up.

"Though (GW) has supported several successful skirmish-level games in the past... that rather than attempt to re-invest in the Specialist Games line (Necromunda, etc.) ... shall acquire and promote the Infinity line of products from Corvus Belli. As of 4/1/2012, we're pleased to announce that Games Workshop will be the exclusive distributor of Infinity products."
